In the midst of ongoing tensions with Iran, U.S. President Donald Trump has called on Americans to bear the burden of slightly elevated gasoline prices. Addressing a rally in New York, Trump emphasized that the higher costs at the pump are a small price to pay to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. He also floated the idea of possibly declaring the Strait of Hormuz as U.S. territory following a successful confrontation with Iran.
Iran, however, has dismissed Trump’s assertions, maintaining that the strategic waterway will remain under its jurisdiction. Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi stated that Iran would persist with the blockade until the United States acknowledges what he described as its defeat. Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi noted that Tehran has yet to decide on resuming talks with the U.S., and reiterated that shipping through the Strait will not recommence unless Washington meets Iran’s conditions.
The standoff has led to significant disruptions in tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial passage for global oil and natural gas trade. This has resulted in increased crude prices, thereby exerting additional pressure on fuel costs. The average price of gasoline in the U.S. has climbed to approximately $4.08 per gallon, marking a 29% rise compared to the previous year. Brent crude prices are also poised for a notable weekly surge.
Economic repercussions are being felt in Iran as well. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has attributed rising inflation to the U.S. blockade, along with sanctions and restrictions on Iranian oil exports. Despite these challenges, the Trump administration has signaled the possibility of imposing further financial measures against Tehran, as diplomatic efforts to reach a ceasefire continue to falter.
