Tech Turmoil: South Korea’s Kospi Plummets 10% Amid Chip Sector Sell-Off

by admin477351

Asian stock markets experienced a downturn on Tuesday, with South Korea’s Kospi index suffering a significant drop of over 10%. This decline was primarily driven by substantial losses in the semiconductor sector. Notably, shares of leading companies Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix tumbled approximately 12%. The downward trend was attributed to investor concerns about the intensifying competition from Chinese AI startups and chipmakers, which could potentially impede the growth trajectory of the global artificial intelligence industry.

In addition to South Korea, other major markets across Asia also closed in the red. Japan’s Nikkei, Taiwan’s Taiex, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng, and China’s Shanghai Composite all reported losses. In contrast, Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 stood out as the sole major regional index to post gains, bucking the broader trend seen across the continent.

Meanwhile, the global oil market saw a reduction in prices. This shift was linked to easing tensions between the United States and Iran, which has sparked optimism for the possibility of renewed diplomatic dialogues. The decreased geopolitical strains have alleviated fears over potential disruptions in global energy supplies, contributing to the decline in oil prices.
